Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - April 23, 2014
Purple Patch & a Monster escapes.................!
After the Best Day of the Season so far was recorded on the 14th. with four fish caught,
it went surprisingly quiet. No fish were caught for the next 6 days. Then in the next 3 days,
we had four fish caught:
April 20: 7.6lb. sea-liced on fly on the
April 21: 9.4 sea-liced
Today we recorded the Best Day of the 2014 Season so far with 4 fish to 14lb. for 12 rod days.
Billy Jewitt landed this 7.6lb. sea-liced fish
on fly on the upper river.
The One that nearly was.............
On the 22nd., syndicate rod Daniel Kolomanski lost a fish on fly on Lower Kilmurry after playing it for an hour.
He reckoned this fish was 25-30lb. & it eventually escaped as Dan was trying to net it - fishing all by himself so a
virtually impossible task on the Island Stream where fish cannot be beached but have to come to the net.
The fish wasn't fresh & had certainly been in the river for some time as it was quite coloured.
The river is continuing to drop off steadily. It is at an absolutely perfect fishing height - 0.46m at Ballyduff.
The water clarity today is about 6 feet.
The water temperature is 9.8ºC or 49.6ºF.
Fishing effort in the last few days has been quite low.
Grilse are being seen in increasing numbers,
especially on the upper river.
We have availability of accommodation & fishing in the coming weeks.
I will of course continue to update the river conditions daily.
