Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - August 31st., 2013

A Purple Patch, a Dry Patch & a Great Sense of Anticipation
Best Total for August since 2009!
Only Six Weeks of Fishing Left - Time to wet a Line!

This was the Blackwater below the Lodge on August 30th. The Ballyduff gauge on 0.17m!

The month of August turned out to be the driest since 2006.
Reasonable amounts of rain at the end of July had brought the river to
a perfect fishing level as we started into August, with two good floods
on the 2nd. & the 5th.  From then on it was dry hot weather and the river has fallen to a very low summer level.
At long last, there seems to be a break
 coming in the weather.
There is a band of rain forecast to come in
from the west later in the coming week.

The total catch for the month of August was 184 fish
to over 14lb. for a mere 220 rod days.

The average height on the Ballyduff gauge for the whole
of August was 0.32m but only 0.19m for the last 10 days.
The Season Catch Total to date is now 324.

The Purple Patch
For the week from Sunday 4th., 110 fish were landed
for a mere 87 rod days.
During this period the average gauge height was 0.41m

  The Great Sense of Anticipation
The very extensive tidal reaches of the river are now full
of fish just waiting for a rise in the water to run the river.

  Notable Catches
Pino Maisano from Italy recorded his Personal Best Fish
on two days in a row with fish of 10.5 & 14.1lb.
  on the 14th. & 15th.
Another Italian angler landed 46 fish to 12lb. in the twenty
days to the 23rd. He has been fishing with us for 3 weeks
every August since 1993, & his previous Best  Ever total
catch was 23. He also lost a very big fish (~25lb.) on the
18th. having played it for 10 mins & seeing the fish clearly.

Prospects

The rain forecast for midweek should bring in the large numbers of fish which are reported to be
waiting in the tidal reaches all the way down to Youghal. Expect superb runs & sport if/when it happens.
There are also reasonably high tides peaking at the end of the week

Time marches on and with just 6 weeks of the season remaining, now is the time to get fishing.

Season Extension
Don't forget that we once again have an extension to the season this year until October 12th.
As last year, the 12 days in October will be Fly Only and Catch & Release.

Great Value Fishing!
Fishing is just €80/day for the remainder of the season.  B&B is also only €35/person sharing.
Availability of both fishing & accommodation is limited for September & better for October.
