Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - June 23, 2013

A Great Week's Fishing!
For the week from Monday 17th. to today, Sunday 23rd., we have had 22 fish caught
for just 57 rod days. Seventeen of these have been taken on the fly.
This is a  remarkable total for a low rod effort, especially as we had a dirty flood last Monday
which took the Ballyduff gauge to 1.09m with clarity barely a foot, and also had two blank days.
The June total is already the third best for the month since 2005.
Even more encouraging was the quality of the fish - ten of which were double figure salmon.
We also had three First Ever Salmon caught.

Monday 17th:
Two First Ever salmon for the Touchais brothers Anton & Hubert on spinner weighing 5 & 7
were sea-liced & both were released.

Tuesday, 18th:
Poor conditions with only 1-1½ feet clarity.
Four fish caught  on spinner which were 6, 8.8, 12.5 & a sea-liced 14lb. released by Victor Maurin (Spain).

Best Day of Season.
Thursday, 20th.:  Eight fish (seven on fly!).

                    Conor Arnold's 12¼ pounder
Three to 12¼lb. for Conor Arnold,
three grilse for Ken Tucker,
& a 6lb. & 10.8lb for 2 other rods.

Best Fish of Season.
Saturday, 22nd.:  17lb. on fly

                    Kieran Conlon's 12¾ pounder
Kieran Conlon arrived at the upper river,
had 3 casts & landed a sea-liced 17 pounder
which he released.

3 more casts and he landed
a sea-liced 12¾ pounder!

Both fell to a #11 Cascade with a red body.

One of the Biggest Ever First Salmon

Saturday, 22nd.: 13.7lb

Bernard Seal had a
guided morning with Glenda
having never salmon fished before.
He put on a fly having learnt
to cast a double hander
& on his third cast
caught a 13.7lb. sea-liced fish
which took half an hour to land
& almost emptied his reel!
Another 11.4lb. fish & a grilse
were also taken - both on fly.

Second Best Fish of Season.
Sunday, June 23:  15¼

        Barry Kendellan's 15¼ pounder
Barry Kendellan caught two fish on fly
weighing 9 & 7.5lb. all on fly
& all off one upper beat.

Terry O'Keeffe also caught a 7
½ pounder
on fly on the same beat.

There were also t
wo double figure fish
lost on fly on a lower beat.

Great Value Fishing!
We are seeing a great increase in the number of anglers visiting
since we made our fishing more affordable. (2013 Price List)

Fishing in June is just €60, July €70 & August, September & October €80.
B&B is also only €35/person sharing.

There is no problem for fishing availability in the coming weeks.
Ensuite B&B accommodation for the first week of July is very limited,
but OK for this week & the weeks thereafter.
Self-catering accommodation is also available in the coming weeks.

Superb Prospects for the coming week
There is a 10cm rise at Mallow this evening - just peaking at 22.00.
This small fresh - combined with 4.0m spring tides from Monday to Wednesday
plus the runs of both grilse & large salmon already coming in, means that we can
expect fantastic sport this week. A grilse with long-tailed sea-lice was caught
on one of our very top beats late this evening
