Ahern's 'junior' reshuffle still awaited        Mark Brennock       26/01/2006

The expected appointment of at least one new Minister of State did not take place yesterday amid speculation that the Taoiseach is planning a significant reshuffle of junior Ministers.
There is widespread speculation in political circles that the Minister of State responsible for Fisheries, Pat "the Cope" Gallagher, may move to another position before Government action to tackle the issue of salmon drift-netting. This centres on concerns for wild salmon stocks.Senior political sources say Mr Gallagher relies on votes from those who depend on the fishing industry in Donegal, and may not, therefore, be in a position to take the necessary action.
A move to another portfolio might signal the Government's determination to take action that would be unpopular with fishing interests.

Mr Ahern is expected to appoint two and possibly three new Ministers of State shortly.

One will replace Ivor Callely, who resigned before Christmas amid controversy over the decoration of his home by a building contractor and the resignation of key staff.

There is also persistent speculation that Síle de Valera, who has said she will not contest the next general election, will be persuaded to resign her post to allow another backbencher to have his or her profile boosted before the next election.

There is some speculation that a third vacancy may emerge, although it is not clear what existing Minister of State might be dropped or willing to quit.

Dublin backbenchers Seán Haughey, Seán Ardagh and Jim Glennon have been tipped as possibles for junior posts since Mr Callely's resignation.

Mr Ahern had been expected to ask the Cabinet to approve a new Minister of State at its meeting yesterday but this did not occur. There was no information last night as to why there has been a delay or when the appointment will be made.
