February
|
The river was in perfect condition in terms of height & clarity 2 days before the Opening Day & spring salmon were already moving into the river. Unfortunately the rain came, and we were fishing a rising flood on the Opening Day. The river was out of order for the first 10 days. The river came into order in the middle of the second week. Feb. 11 5 springers to 10 lb. taken on spinner from Beat 2 right up to Beat 17. Feb. 12 1 springer taken on Beat 6. Feb. 13 5 fish to 10 lb. including a first ever salmon of 7.8 lb on spinner from Beat 8 for Derrick Johnson (UK). During the rest of the month, the river dropped steadily with superb clarity – visibility being 7-8 feet. The very cold weather (night temperatures dropping to -4°C) brought the water temperature down to below 40°F - 4°C, which slowed up the running fish & made them more difficult to take as they were less enthusiastic to move to take a spinner or fly. During the last week of February, three lovely sea-liced fish to 9.5 lb. were taken, and one party had half a dozen offers on the fly, hooking two & losing both. As the month ended, the river was at summer level, but fish were still moving through. The improvement in the spring run has continued, with the impression being that it has even surpassed the run of 2003. February total: 14 springers 10 lb. (averaging 8.2 lb.) compared to the average for the last 5 years of only 2. |
